In the last 12 months, ONI has released two fabrics that have been massive hits: the black secret denim (completely sold out, only a few jackets are left) and the AIZUMI. Both have been pioneer-work and push the boundaries of fabric-making.
The magic of these fabrics lies in both the construction of the cotton and the techniques of dyeing.
ONI felt that it would be an amazing project to combine these two fabrics into a brand-new, mind-boggling denim. We present you with the KUROAI: Black secret denim x AIZUMI. Make no mistake, this is not just a remix of these two fabrics, it’s a radical re-thinking of these two. To be clear, this is 100% secret denim in both weft and warp. 20oz of slubby, neppy and loose denim which will be extremely comfy once broken in.
The weft is ONI’s black secret denim and the warp is secret denim that is treated with AIZUMI. But it’s not that simple: The AIZUMI fabric released this year is 16.5oz and the secret denim is 20oz. ONI had to develop new techniques to apply the AIZUMI dye to the far thicker and heavier cotton of the secret denim.
The idea of the AIZUMI is to have a sulfur base that is then dyed with AIZUMI, which is a black kind of ink that will fade to a blueish kind of grey later on. ONI’s main idea was to create an interesting effect to have a black base (the black secret denim) for this blueish grey to really shine when the fading begins.
ONI told us that using yellow, blue, purple and red weft has been done before. But these trends usually fade away. Indigo x Indigo, Indigo x beige, and Indigo x Black are combinations that stood the test of time and are here to stay. And ONI know what they’re talking about, they’ve been in the business for ages. ONI are true pioneers and their knowledge is truly vintage.
So when they set out to create the KUROAI, they learned a few new things about denim. The yarn of the secret selvedge of the KUROAI is tighter than of normal or even black selvedge denim. It must be that the sulfur and AIZUMI ink react differently with the thicker yarn and make it tighter. The warp is, therefore, a lot harder and rougher which means the fading will be even better and faster.
This fabric is incredibly costly and complicated to make and therefore the supply is super limited. We at Denimio are happy to stock the KUROAI in 506, 622 and 902. The quantities are extremely limited and will be sold out quickly, we therefore highly recommend to get a pair. We have no idea when this will be restocked, we are still waiting for the black secret denim to make a comeback.
This is a fabric for true denim connaisseurs and if you are into denim, this CANNOT be missing from your collection!!
PS: ONI gave us a little washing advice for this one. Wash in cold water (max 30°) to get the best fading results. If you wash with warmer temperatures, the starch will come off too quickly and the fabric becomes too soft. Soften it up gradually and enjoy magnificent fades!!!
