Awa Natural

Japanese denim is always sourced heavily from history and culture. This edition is another incredible reproduction to keep the culture alive: with natural indigo dye, a fabric with technique especially known to Tokushima Prefecture called ‘Awa Natural Indigo Dyeing Method’ that is still being used from the Edo period. The process goes essentially soaking the cotton cloth into indigo that’s fermented in a kettle beforehand. After being kept dyed for some time, the cloth is now squeezed by hand and exposed to the air to dry. This process is repeated many, many times to produce that incredible natural indigo dye immersed completely into the cloth. Since this fabric exudes certain special darkness, the process is done twice as many times as usual. This resulted in a roll of fabrics that is truly neppy with an intense uneven overall feel. This technique is one of the most difficult techniques ever done on a dye and it’s truly a dying heritage that we all still try to cultivate.
