If you’re interested in Japanese jeans, you’ve probably noticed that each manufacturer has a very diverse denim with its own features. You’ve also probably encountered a term like “low tension denim”. We periodically receive questions from you about different types of denim, so we will write you very briefly about what low tension denim is and give you examples of such a product.
The term “low tension” is directly related to the weaving of denim. The threads are placed on the loom before weaving. Different thread tensions can be used.
The lower the thread tension, the more “lively” and textured the fabric will be. As a rule, low thread tension denim is woven more slowly on the shuttle loom than high thread tension denim. It is a very laborious and painstaking process.
The result is a beautiful natural heterogeneity of texture. In addition, low tension denim is usually soft and comfortable to wear, even if cotton varieties with short fibers are used.
It should also be understood that such denim can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer. The texture of denim and the degree of its heterogeneity may depend not only on the degree of tension of the threads during weaving, but also on many other factors. These factors include the combination of certain cotton grades, the degree of twist of the thread, the thickness of the thread, the structure of the thread and many others.
However, if you see the term “low tension” in the product description, you are usually seeing denim with some degree of texture heterogeneity, where the threads are not woven very tightly. This can be either an extreme “ultra slubby” or a very slight natural heterogeneity in the texture of the denim.
Oni Low Tension 15OZ Denim
Let’s give you one of the examples of this kind of denim. Some time ago, the Japanese brand Oni Denim, which is known for its author’s experimental types of denim, again released several models in the “low tension denim” series. Here, the classic all-purpose 15OZ density is used. Let us remind you that Oni Denim started its history precisely with medium density denim. Such fabric will not be extremely heavy and such denim can be worn all year round. In this case, you don’t have to be a fan of heavy denim at all to enjoy all the features of this fabric.
We see a very dark rich indigo color. The texture of this denim is noticeably pronounced. It may not always be visible in the pictures in the product description, but if you take these jeans in your hands, you will realize that this is the kind of denim where your hands feel all the unique aesthetics of Japanese “wabi sabi”.
The unevenness of the texture is noticeable on both the front and back sides.
The classic pink selvedge ID thread is woven into the selvedge of this denim.
Over time the jeans will get fading and all the heterogeneity of the texture of this denim will show through and this denim will look really great.
Let’s take a look at what models are currently available in the 15oz Low Tension Denim series.
